Moses Sumney operates on his own energy spectrum. A chameleonic manipulator of spiritual wave lengths. Through sound, song and image, Sumney rejects the simplicity of a binary existence—he is many, he is one.

Five EPs and two studio albums deep, have seen Sumney embrace soaring chamber pop, psychedelic soul, spiritual jazz and delicate folk. In 2021, that relentless curiosity and experimentation culminated in Live from Blackalachia, recorded in the Blue Ridge Mountains, near Sumney’s home in North Carolina. The live album’s accompanying film saw Sumney expand his visual language too, cleverly manipulating stagecraft to create surreal imagery.

Sumney is a multifaceted artist born between worlds—he was raised in the USA and his parents’ birth country, Ghana—and often explores his impulses and experiences as an outsider. But it’s his willingness to inhabit the edges of experience that has enabled disparate communities to see themselves in his art.
