# GENERAL FAQs

__Q. What is RISING?__

A. RISING is a surge of art, music, performance and ceremony in the heart of Melbourne –a new festival in Victoria’s cultural calendar. __RISING returns 1—12 June 2022.__

__Q. When will the program be announced?__

A. The full program for RISING 2022 will be announced on March 17. Check out our 2021 program [here](https://2021.rising.melbourne/festival-program).

__Q. I’m not sure if RISING is for me. What kind of events will be in the program?__

A. RISING is for everyone. From visual art, installations, performance and live music to unique food events, we’ll have all kinds of experiences for you to enjoy whatever you’re into.

__Q. Who is curating the festival?__

A. Hannah Fox and Gideon Obarzanek are RISING’s co-Artistic Directors, and lead a diverse team of national and international arts professionals in programming the festival.

__Q. How is the festival funded?__
A. RISING is funded by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria and Visit Victoria.

We also receive support through City of Melbourne and the Australian Government, as well as a range of sponsors and donors.

The museum is located in Fed Square, which is opposite Flinders Street train station, and sits within Melbourne’s Free Tram Zone.

If your journey starts or finishes outside the boundaries of the Free Tram Zone, you must touch on your myki at the reader to make sure you have a valid ticket.

BICYCLES

If you plan to cycle to ACMI, you can lock your bike to purpose-built bicycle racks installed around the perimeter of Fed Square, but you’ll need to bring your own lock. You can’t bring your bike into ACMI itself.

ACCESSIBLE ENTRY

ACMI has two entrances: one on Flinders Street, and the other in Fed Square.

The Flinders Street entrance is easily accessible via a wheelchair ramp. This entrance is closed outside museum opening times. To access ACMI outside these hours, enter via the Fed Square Entrance.

The Fed Square entrance is located in the heart of Fed Square plaza, between Chocolate Buddha and Beer Deluxe. Please be aware that the Fed Square plaza is cobblestoned and may be difficult to navigate for visitors using mobility aids.

To get to the Fed Square entrance from the Flinders Street entrance, you can use the lifts near the end of The Atrium – to the left of Beer Deluxe – to get to the Fed Square plaza level.

LIFTS

A series of lifts (or elevators) offer access to all levels of ACMI.

- __Ground floor – Level 1 access only.__ The Ground floor lift is located between Tickets & Information desk and the entrance to The Story of the Moving Image exhibition.
- __Ground – Level 1 & 2 access.__ This Ground Floor lift is located behind the stairs opposite the bathrooms. You can access it by continuing down the corridor between Tickets & Information desk and the entrance to The Story of the Moving Image exhibition. This lift grants you access to levels 1 and 2.
- __Ground floor – Basement Gallery 4 access.__ A goods lift that allows access to the Underground Gallery 4 is located behind Gallery 2 and 4, via a corridor. Only in use when an exhibition is on view in Gallery 4.
- __Level 1 – Cinemas access.__ here are two lifts located on Level 1. As you enter from Fed Square, one is around the corner on your right, as you pass the Tickets & Information desk and approach the stairs. If you make a hard right towards Hero at ACMI and the Level 1 toilets, you will see the lift. This is the best lift option to reach the Cinemas level (Level 2).
- __Level 1 – Galleries access.__ As you enter from Fed Square, walk past the wall of screens and seating area in front of the wall of cabinets on your left, the lift is located opposite the seating area. This lift provides access to Ground floor, the Galleries level. 
- __Level 2 – Level 1 access.__ The Level 2 Lift services the cinemas. It goes down to Level 1, where you will find the restaurant and bar, Hero at ACMI; and the Labs Level. This lift also provides access to Ground floor, the Galleries level.

ACCESSIBLE BATHROOMS

Toilets are located on Ground floor and Level 1. ACMI has wheelchair accessible toilets on both floors.

Baby change facilities are available near the toilets at the Flinders St (Ground floor) and Fed Square (Level 1) entrances.

COMPANION CARDS

Companion Cards, registered in Victoria and interstate, provide the carers accompanying card holders with free access to ACMI programs.

If you use a wheelchair you can access all of their spaces.

If you need to borrow a wheelchair for use inside the Museum, present your ID at the Tickets & Information Desk (located at Ground floor and Level 1 respectively) and we’ll organise one for you free of charge.

Birrarung (Yarra River)

Located on the northern bank of the Yarra River between Federation Square and Melbourne Park, Birrarung Marr features a range of native flora and sculpted terraces. It is also the location for the children's arts centre, ArtPlay, and provides space for many events held throughout the year.
In Woi Wurrung and Boon Wurrung culture, 'Birrarung' is the traditional name of the Yarra River; and 'marr' refers to the mist that sometimes settles over the Birrarung. The park name reflects the ‘river of mists'.

This area was historically used for railway lines and yards from 1856. In 1992, the Victorian Government undertook a process of reorganisation of land uses around the then proposed Federation Square. This led to the reclamation of the former railyard to allow access to the river and land for public open space purposes. 

Construction of the park began in 2000 and was a joint venture between the City of Melbourne and the Victorian Government. Birrarung Marr was opened in 2002. 

The park hosts a variety of native flora, sculpted terraces, pedestrian and bicycle paths and is used for numerous festivals and events throughout the year. 

The former rail use continues to be represented by the adaptation of the former Princes Bridge Lecture Room (a purpose-built railway training building constructed in 1916-17) into ArtPlay, a children’s art centre and gallery. 

At the east end of the park, the William Barak pedestrian bridge leads directly to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and the Tanderrum Bridge leads directly to the Melbourne Park tennis centre.

Chunky Move is located at 111 Sturt Street, Southbank, in the heart of the Melbourne Arts Precinct. Enter from Sturt Street or through the undercroft via Grant Street. There’s a tram stop nearby, and plenty of car parks and bike racks. It’s also a nice walk from Flinders Street train station.

Nearest accessible tram stop: Route 1 travels along Sturt Street and straight to our building. Alight at Stop 18. Walk past the ACCA front door, through the courtyard towards the Chunky Move sign. This is the front door.

THE MAIN SQUARE  

The undulating surface of the Main Square is made up of sandstone cobblestones, with a marked access path. Swanston Street offers the best access to the Main Square, and lift access is available to and from The Atrium. The Big Screen is equipped with a hearing loop and there are accessible toilets located next to Time Out Café. The Main Stage has lift access for performers, and St Paul’s Court, Swanston Street Forecourt and The Amphitheatre also have wheelchair access.

There are accessible public toilets and baby-change facilities located in the Main Square, next to Time Out Cafe and in The Atrium, next to IceBar.  

ACCESSIBLE PARKING  

FedSquare has its own multi-level car park, which is accessible from Russell Street or Batman Ave (Exhibition Street extension – City Link). The Federation Square Car Park is open 24hrs and has accessible spaces located next to the lift on each level.  

PUBLIC TRANSPORT  

Fed Square is part of Melbourne’s  Free Tram Zone, which includes the area from the iconic Queen Victoria Market to Victoria Harbour in Docklands, up to Spring Street and over Flinders Street Station and Fed Square.  

Travel on trams within this zone is free, and you won’t need a myki, however, if your journey starts or finishes outside the boundaries of the Free Tram Zone, you must touch on your myki at the reader in the normal way to make sure you have a valid ticket.

TAXIS AND PICKING UP/DROPPING OFF PASSENGERS

Forum Melbourne

This activation takes place in a multi-level car park that does not have lift access. Participants traverse four flights of stairs (32 steps) to reach the start of the exhibition, and cover a distance of 370m to view all of the works. To exit the venue one must go down four flights of stairs (33 steps). The journey involves some ramps and inclines due to the existing design of the car park. There is a sit-down bar and numerous rest points along the journey.  

We have an assisted access plan in place for those with mobility needs. Please ensure you book one of our Accessibility tickets by contacting our Ticketing team on 03 9662 4242 or via email at ticketing@rising.melbourne and letting us know of your access requirements.  

Accessibility ticket purchasers are entitled to a free companion ticket so that a friend or carer may assist you with the journey. The RISING team can transport those with Accessibility tickets via a wheelchair accessible vehicle to the higher levels of the car park.

ACCESSIBLE ENTRANCE

The Comedy Theatre can provide a ramp into one of the front doors on Exhibition Street. A member of our security or front of house staff will be able to assist you on arrival at the theatre. At the doors facing on to Exhibition Street there is a small step, which as you move away from Lonsdale Street is reduced to a small lip. Doors are usually propped open during performances. The entrance opens directly into the foyer, which is small and can become quite congested.

ACCESSIBLE BATHROOMS

There are accessible toilets located on all foyer levels and backstage areas of the Centre. Please ask our venue staff for assistance in locating the one nearest to your seating or working location. 

EASY ACCESS SEATING AND WHEELCHAIR ACCESS

For the convenience of patrons who have restricted mobility but do not require the use of a wheelchair, Melbourne Recital Centre has identified locations within the auditorium where patrons do not need to use stairs to reach their seats. These seats are located in row U of the Stalls, row A of the Circle, and seats 11-15 of both upper wings. Accessible seating in the wings are also wider and have articulated, raising arm-rests.

Wheelchair accessible spaces are located in Stalls Row U and the Upper East Wing, all with Companion seating available. All seating and wheelchair spaces can be booked through all MRC sales channels, including through the MRC website.

LIFTS AND ESCALATORS 

Lift access is available to all foyer levels of the building and all backstage areas (except the Orchestra Pit). Escalator access is also available between Ground Level and foyer Level 1.

A Changing Places bathroom is also located nearby at Arts Centre Melbourne’s Hamer Hall, approximately 300 metres from NGV International.

These are fully accessible toilets with full-sized change table, hoist system and basin, designed for the exclusive use of people with disability, their families and carers.

A bespoke pathway has been created that meanders through the Bowl grounds. Due to existing slopes within the venue and the length of this one-way path (1.8-2km), this event requires assisted access for wheelchair users and those with restricted mobility.

If you have accessibility requirements you are encouraged to book a free companion ticket, so that a friend or carer may assist you along the pathway. There will be numerous rest points available along the journey and event staff available to assist if required. There is no formal drop off area onsite, however there is a small break in parking with curb cut access on Linlithgow Avenue at the bottom of Gate 1, which can be used for a quick drop off if needed.

Nearest accessible tram stop: Tram stops along St Kilda Road are wheelchair accessible, however not all trams servicing those stops are low floor. Tram tracker has information as to which tram will be a low floor tram.


Sidney Myer Music Bowl

St Paul's Cathedral can be accessed by wheelchairs through the west door into the Nave via a ramp from Flinders Street. Please be aware that the Cathedral is an historic building and areas of the Cathedral have low lighting and uneven flooring. Enter The Capitol Arcade from Swanston Street or Howie Place. Halfway through the arcade there’s a lift (between the jeweller and the dry cleaner). Take the lift up to The Capitol’s Foyer level. From the Foyer, a separate lift provides access to the Theatre, Salon and Lounge levels inside The Capitol.

Wheelchair accessible amenities are located on the Foyer level. Facilities include a baby change area.

The Capitol Theatre has eight accessible spaces, accompanied by eight companion seats. Four of these spaces are accessible from the Foyer level. Nestled by the sea, complete with rare and significant trees, a formal palm avenue and a charming Edwardian ornamental pond among its many attractions, the Williamstown Botanic Gardens, opened in 1860, provides a peaceful setting in which to enjoy a picnic, take a stroll along the intricate pathways or just relax and daydream on the cool green lawns.

An easy 10 minute walk from the ferry service in Commonwealth Reserve and just a few minutes from the Williamstown Beach Railway Station, the gardens have good accessibility with firm gravel paths and facilities nearby.

Williamstown Botanic Gardens are one of Victoria’s first public gardens and are listed on the Victorian Heritage Register as significant for their historical, aesthetic, scientific (horticultural) and social significance to the state of Victoria. They are also listed on the National Register and classified by The National Trust of Australia (Vic.)
