As part of RISING’s Japan in Focus programming strand, is a co-headlining double bill of icons, innovators and instigators direct from Japan—mercurial magpies from, and inspired by, Tokyo’s cut-and-paste Shibuya-kei scene of the mid-’90s.
With hooves firmly placed in the unruly and technicolour fields of punk rock and electronic dance music, Buffalo Daughter are their own animal. Political, impassioned and ready to party, Buffalo Daughter’s founding members—suGar Yoshinaga, Yumiko Ohno and MoOog Yamamoto—have been stitching together guitar riffs, turntablism and electro since 1993. Last year saw the band release its first album in seven years, We Are the Times, diving even further into the sounds of the electronic underground.
Coming along for the ride is CHAI, part of the newest-wave of Shibuya-kei offspring. The four-woman band took a step from their scrappy punk roots into pop polish with last year’s new album, WINK—a record that packs in nods to EDM, deep-house and breezy R&B. You’ll hear a lot of CHAI at RISING—they were the first and only choice to soundtrack our launch film (what a bop).
